- No camera in the loop — not "video optional". If the platform's economics run on video, text users are an afterthought and it shows in the queue.
- No sign-up — the point of Omegle was zero friction and zero identity. A phone-number gate breaks the contract.

- AntiLand (iOS/Android) — anonymous group rooms with a karma system, no registration to start. Con: rooms are chaotic by nature; good for lurking and banter, weak for genuine two-person conversation.
- Whisper (iOS/Android) — anonymous confession posts with DMs on top, large community. Con: it's a feed first and a chat second — you're replying to posts, not getting matched — and its community has a documented harassment problem.
- Whisperly (web) — voice and text pairing with an explicit no-video stance. Con: voice-first positioning; if you want pure typing, you're using half the product.
- AirTALK (web) — voice plus text, camera permanently excluded. Con: same trade-off — built around talking out loud, with text as the side channel.
- RandoChat (mobile) — bare-bones random text chat with self-destructing messages. Con: aggressive, opaque banning is widely reported, and iOS availability is spotty.
- StrangerLine (web) — text, voice and video with no sign-up, plus a reconnect feature for lost chats. Con: video is in the mix, so the text queue inherits the roulette crowd.
Video-first, text mode available: Emerald Chat and Uhmegle are the sites people usually mean when they search "which Omegle is real" — both run a text-only mode next to a camera roulette. Con: the text queue is the video crowd with the camera off, so expect "asl?" and bots at Omegle levels; and neither is an official successor, whatever the name suggests.
Flagged, not listed: Chatous still appears in most competing lists, but shutdown chatter and outage reports have followed it for months and we couldn't verify it as reliably alive — exactly the kind of zombie entry this list exists to filter.

Most of the category lives in browser tabs. Web chats are instant and disposable — nothing to install, nothing to keep. The costs: more bots, weaker moderation tooling, and no real notion of continuity.
A native app flips the trade. Interest matching changes the math. Pick up to five interests; get paired with someone who shares at least one; see the overlap before you connect. A large share of people who land here typed some version of "omegle alternatives unmoderated", "omegle no moderation" or "omegle 18+ text". Worth being precise about what that search is asking for, because the sites that answer it are selling something else.
Omegle's "unmoderated section" was a label on the adult video pool. In text, "unmoderated" tends to mean one of two different wishes: adults talking like adults, without a chaperone rewriting the conversation — or no age gate at all. Sites that put "unmoderated" in the tagline deliver the second thing, and the second thing is exactly what killed Omegle: no age check means minors in the pool, and no moderation means the bots and the scammers stay.
